When I found out I was pregnant with my first child I started doing all kinds of research on how to make everything easier. After 9 months of looking up symptoms and remedies on Google and Pinterest I have compiled a “Pregnancy Survival Kit.”
Pregnancy Survival Kit
- Ginger- take this supplement once daily with your prenatal vitamin to ward off nausea. You can also find Ginger candies that are labeled as being for morning sickness, but they can get pretty pricey.
- Vitamin B-6 – taking this supplement once daily with your ginger and prenatal vitamin also helps to keep morning sickness at bay.
- Dramamine – Dramamine is safe to take during pregnancy when the supplements just aren’t cutting it.
- Mints – peppermint is a natural way to fight off nausea. I made it a habit to eat a couple of mints after every meal just to make sure I didn’t get nauseated. (If you plan on breastfeeding, do not eat peppermint or use peppermint essential oils after delivery as it can dry up your supply)
- Sour Patch Kids- Sour candies of any kind can also help with nausea. Trust me, it works.
- Bio Oil- Using bio oil on my belly 1-2 times a day during my second and third trimester made it to where I didn’t get a single stretch mark. Of course this will vary from person to person, but bio oil and coconut oil are the best for preventing stretch marks.
- Doppler- I purchased a Doppler from Amazon for $30 so I could listen to my baby’s heart beat whenever I wanted. Being able to hear their heart when you are high risk really helps to keep the anxiety away. However, you need to remember that it isn’t always easy to find. So in the event you can’t find the heartbeat, take a break and change positions. Whatever, you do, DON’T freak out!
- Loofah on a Stick- during the last 2 months it gets really difficult to bend over. This makes showering interesting, and actually a little dangerous. You have to wash your feet somehow! LOL
- Water Bottle- Get a good quality water bottle. You will get more thirsty than usual and become dehydrated a lot easier. Dehydration can make you dizzy and land you in the hospital. A cute water bottle that you can easily carry around definitely helps. Before becoming pregnant I was terrible about drinking enough water. I bought a leak proof Contigo water bottle and carried it everywhere! If you plan on breastfeeding, you will need to drink lots of water to keep your supply up as well.
- Lavender Oil and Lemonade- During my first trimester I had a headache for two weeks straight. It was awful! Acetaminophen did absolutely nothing. A natural remedy for headaches that is baby safe is lavender lemonade. You can either make your own lemonade, or just buy some like I did. I put 2 drops of lavender essential oil in 24oz of lemonade. You can also add a little honey if the flavor is too strong. Drinking this as needed helps to get rid of headaches. I also put a dab of peppermint oil on the back of my neck to help as well.
- Mucinex- Sometimes your allergies will go into over drive when you are pregnant. I’m pretty sure I had a cold for about a month during my second trimester. I took Mucinex daily to help. Just make sure it is NOT Mucinex D, only the regular Mucinex is pregnancy safe.
- Lumbar Support – I purchased a lumbar support made for pregnancy to use in my third trimester, things can get pretty uncomfortable at the end.
- Salonpas- These medication free pain patches are great for muscle pain. My upper back was on fire for about 3 months and these helped when combined with ice packs.
- Tennis Ball- Ok, so I know this sounds weird. As I said in the last item, my upper back was hurting pretty bad. When I couldn’t take it I would put my back up against the wall with the tennis ball in between my shoulder blades and squat up and down using the ball as a massager. This is great to do almost anywhere and when you have no one to rub your back for you. I kept a tennis ball on my desk as work to use whenever I needed to.
